How time grows a SIP

A SIP of ₹10,000 a month at an assumed 12% a year. Notice how the returns overtake the money you put in as the years go by: that is compounding.

Regular SIP vs step-up SIP

Over 15 years at 12%, a regular ₹10,000 SIP could grow to about ₹47,59,314 (47.59 lakh). Raising the SIP by 10% every year could grow it to about ₹82,74,718 (82.75 lakh), with ₹38,12,698 invested in total instead of ₹18,00,000.

The SIP formula, with an example

FV = P × ((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i)

  • P is the monthly SIP amount
  • i is the monthly rate that grows to your yearly return: (1 + yearly % ÷ 100)1/12 − 1
  • n is the number of months

For ₹5,000 a month at 12% for 5 years: i = (1.12)1/12 − 1 ≈ 0.00949 and n = 60, giving about ₹4,05,518 from ₹3,00,000 invested.

Tips for planning

  • Use a conservative return for planning. Past returns do not guarantee future ones.
  • Stay invested for the long term. Compounding does most of its work in the later years.
  • Increase your SIP when your income grows, even by a small amount.
  • Review your investments once a year rather than reacting to daily market moves.

Frequently asked questions

How does a step-up SIP work?

Your monthly SIP stays the same for 12 months, then increases by the step-up percentage, and so on every year. With a 10% step-up, ₹10,000 a month becomes ₹11,000 in year 2 and ₹12,100 in year 3.

Is a step-up SIP better than a regular SIP?

It invests more money over time, so the final value is higher. Whether it suits you depends on whether your income can keep up with the yearly increase.

Are these returns guaranteed?

No. Mutual fund returns change with the market and can be negative in some years. The calculator assumes a steady return so you can plan; real results will differ. It is not investment advice.
