GST on ₹1,000.00 at common rates
| GST rate | CGST + SGST | GST amount | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5% | 2.5% + 2.5% | ₹50.00 | ₹1,050.00 |
| 18% | 9% + 9% | ₹180.00 | ₹1,180.00 |
| 40% | 20% + 20% | ₹400.00 | ₹1,400.00 |
The GST formulas
Adding GST (price before tax):
GST = Amount × Rate ÷ 100 · Total = Amount + GST
Removing GST (price already includes tax):
Price before GST = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate) · GST = Total − Price before GST
A common mistake when removing GST
If a bill of ₹1,180.00 includes 18% GST, taking 18% off the total gives₹967.60, which is wrong. The 18% was added to the price before tax, not to the total. The correct price before GST is ₹1,000.00, and the GST is ₹180.00. Use "Remove GST" in the calculator to get this right every time.
CGST, SGST and IGST
- Within one state: GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state). At 18%, that is 9% + 9%. In union territories without a legislature, UTGST replaces SGST.
- Between states: the full rate is charged as IGST.
